We live in a society that tends to accept certain emotions and suppress or ignore others. From a young age, we’re taught to value positivity and happiness and to view emotions like sadness, anger, and frustration as negative or undesirable. While cultivating a positive mindset can be beneficial, the pressure to always be happy and optimistic can have harmful effects.

In this post, I want to share the concept of toxic positivity, its impact on our emotional well-being, and why it’s crucial to stay authentic and embrace all of our emotions. I also want to discuss how EFT can help navigate those emotions while acknowledging them.

What is toxic positivity?

Toxic positivity is the idea that we should only focus on positive emotions and suppress or ignore negative emotions. It’s the belief that we should always look on the bright side, stay optimistic, and avoid “negative” emotions like sadness, anger, and frustration. This attitude can be harmful because it denies our authentic emotional experiences and can make us feel guilty or ashamed for feeling anything other than happiness.

When we try to suppress or ignore our negative emotions, we’re not allowing ourselves to process and express them in a healthy way. This can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. Suppressing our emotions can also have physical effects on our bodies, such as headaches, digestive issues, and insomnia.
